Great learning experience on the flight deck. As an AB you are right in the middle of all flight operations and get to see aircraft launch and recover up close every day. The camaraderie on the flight deck is unmatched — everyone depends on everyone else. It gave me a sense of purpose I never had before.

Like any rate, ABM has its downsides. Long hours, time away from family, and Navy bureaucracy are real.

The flight deck is one of the most dangerous work environments in the world. You're working around jet blast, spinning props, and moving aircraft in all weather conditions. The hours are brutal during flight ops — 12 to 16 hour days are standard and sleep deprivation is real. Injuries are common.

AB rates have some of the hardest physical work in the Navy with limited civilian transferability. When you get out, explaining that you directed aircraft on a flight deck doesn't translate to most job interviews. The hearing damage alone isn't worth it.

💀 Reality

Boot camp is 10 weeks of controlled discomfort. The fleet is years of real work, real deployments, real watch rotations, and real time away from family. Many sailors who breeze through boot camp struggle with the monotony and demands of fleet life. The hard part is not boot camp — it is the four to six years after.

You can bring very little — one set of civilian clothes, essential documents, and basic toiletries. Everything else is provided or purchased at the Navy Exchange. Leave the electronics and jewelry at home.

Galley food ranges from decent to barely edible depending on the command. On a ship, meal times are fixed and the menu repeats. You will develop a personal relationship with hot sauce and ramen from the ship's store.

Depending on your rate and the manning situation, you could join a ship already in its deployment workup cycle. Some sailors deploy within months of arriving at their first command.

Free time exists but can be taken away at any moment. Duty days, last-minute tasking, field day, and "voluntold" events eat into personal time constantly.

Your rate determines your daily life for 4-6 years — what you do, where you are stationed, how fast you promote, and what you earn after the Navy. It is the single most important decision you make at MEPS.

Standard deployments are 7-9 months and can be extended. "Goes by fast" is what people say after it is over, not during month five when every day looks the same.
